Jean-Paul Guerlain transcribes the history of Bagatelle
History plunges us to the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, in Paris, in 1779. The Comte d’Artois, Louis XVI’s younger brother, then made the bet, a little crazy, let’s say -le, to build a castle in 64 days, in honor of Marie-Antoinette. The challenge was met thanks to a multitude of people who worked day and night. Once the castle was built, it was surrounded by magnificent gardens, with among others, 1200 species of varieties of roses … The gardens of Bagatelle were born! It is from these sumptuous gardens steeped in history that Jean-Paul Guerlain decided to draw inspiration from. 4th generation of Guerlain perfumers, Jean-Paul Guerlain succeeds Jacques Guerlain, his grandfather. Able to recognize more than 3000 different smells, Jean-Paul Guerlain is impressive and very talented. Jean-Paul Guerlain has left a considerable mark on his family’s history and we owe him great successes such as “Samsara, Vétiver” and “Nuit d’Amour”.
The sumptuous bouquet of flowers from the Jardins de Bagatelle
“Jardins de Bagatelle” begins in a delicate and airy way thanks to the presence of bergamot, lemon and violet flower, combining floral, powdery and citrus tones. Delicate, feminine and captivating, the heart of the “Jardins de Bagatelle” combines the most beautiful flowers, namely gardenia, narcissus, lily of the valley, jasmine and rose. Symbol of May 1st, therefore Labor Day, lily of the valley has a very special place in the hearts of the French. Native to Japan, lily of the valley is now found in all temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. It is from May 1, 1560 that the lily of the valley will represent a lucky charm, thanks to King Charles IX who offered this pretty flower with bells to the ladies of the court, wishing them much happiness … In perfumery, the lily of the valley is a flower silent, we therefore obtain an essence of lily of the valley from synthetic molecules. Lily of the valley gives off soft, flowery and green tones. Finally, the base of “Jardins de Bagatelle” is both woody and sensual, because it combines cedar, vetiver, civet and vanilla, leaving behind a most seductive trail. The original bottle is like a sculpture with a draped shoulder. To make it, Guerlain was inspired by the silhouette of a caryatid at the Château de Bagatelle. The result offers a final touch of elegance to this composition steeped in history.
