Mathieu Nardin, perfumer from father to sonIf some perfumers arrive in this way out of love for smells or almost by chance, it must be recognized that this is not the majority of cases. Very often, this passion for perfumery is passed on from generation to generation. Thus, the basin of the city of Grasse has seen the birth of a good number of perfumers. It must be said that this Provencal city has been considered the capital of perfumery since the 16th century. Knowledge of plants and smells is passed on from father to son, and it is precisely in this environment that Mathieu Nardin was immersed throughout his childhood.
Mathieu Nardin, a child of perfumery
Mathieu Nardin is not really original, and has a fairly conventional course. Originally from Grasse, he immersed himself very early in the world of perfume, and orienting himself towards this profession was obvious to him. He was raised in a family of perfumers, which very quickly developed his creativity and his sense of smell. He also confides that his first olfactory memories are those of fresh and bewitching jasmine in the first light of summer mornings. His grandparents regularly took him to pick flowers when he was a child. He liked to walk in the fields of roses, and thus acquired a deep respect for the finest raw materials. His older brother is also a perfumer. Together, they followed a school career closely linked to this universe. Mathieu Nardin’s first professional experience in a perfumery dates back to the age of 13, when he did an internship at Robertet. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, he joined the most prestigious perfume school in the world: the ISIPCA of Versailles. He completed his work-study apprenticeship at Robertet, a company in which he still works today.
Mathieu Nardin, a lover of spicy fragrances
Mathieu Nardin is a perfumer who likes to explore multiple universes. Like many people his age, he is passionate about traveling abroad, and draws unfailing inspiration from it. During his explorations, he spends most of his time focusing on the smells around him. For him, the nose is skillfully linked to memories and images. He is constantly working on himself, and thus delivers a part of his personality and his history in each of his compositions. As such, if he likes working with a multitude of different smells, Mathieu Nardin says he really likes frankincense and labdanum, two very rich and complex raw materials at the same time. A particularly prolific perfumer, Mathieu Nardin is constantly working on several projects at the same time. Indeed, he often likes to put a perfume aside to come back to it later, after taking a step back. This is where he explores the best of his creativity. He lets the notes macerate and then comes back to her with a fresher nose. This very versatile character has not finished surprising us, and it seems that a future rich in creations already awaits him.
